Originally, a gentleman in Chinese referred to a person with virtue, learning, and manners, and all literary figures aspired to become princes. The characteristics of four types of plants, orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums, and plums, are similar to those of princes, so they have become typical materials for literati paintings. 井出岳水 Ide Gakusui (1899-1978) Printmaker from the Taisho and Showa periods. Born in Funatsu-cho, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1897. After graduating from Nihon University College of Art, studied under Tamon Yamauchi and then Kanpo Arai.
