A page with text loss (see photo) Olfert Dapper (Amsterdam, baptized 6 January 1636 – Amsterdam, buried 29 December 1689) was a Dutch geographer, polyglot and historian. His books about distant lands became world famous in his time. Translations appeared in English, French and German. Though he apparently never left Amsterdam, Dapper produced several finely illustrated volumes describing travels in Asia, Asia Minor, the Middle East, and Africa.
