Byôbu 屏風 (paravent) - Feuille d'argent, Bois laqué, Soie - Japon - Début de la période Meiji (seconde moitié du XIXe siècle)

An enticing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a uncommon genre painting set against an oxidizing silver leaf background, depicting a “tsukimi” 月見 scene. This translates to "moon-viewing," a celebration of the autumn moon in Japanese tradition. The scene is illuminated by a brilliantly full moon high above a vast city, highlighting the diverse ways people commemorate this occasion. To the right, an aged nobleman engages in prayer within an elevated, somewhat secluded tatami chamber, a ghanta (bell) placed before him on a lacquer table. His gaze is directed towards an alcove that houses a scroll bearing text. A servant gently fans him from behind, while a bijin 美人 (beautiful woman) and a retainer watch curiously from a distance. On the left, a warm and inviting festivity unfolds in an open establishment. A bijin clad in a luxurious kimono, performs a fan dance, captivating those around her, including musicians, other bijin, and two men enjoying a leisurely smoke. Above, on the rooftop, a wooden platform hosts a man offering prayers to the moon, dango laid on a serving tray before him. Next to him, a child waves enthusiastically at a woman standing on the open veranda below. These diverse scenes are encased within dense silver leaf clouds. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina. Rendered in watercolour and ink. Surrounded by two brocade silk borders, a thin light one and wide dark one with a flower pattern. Framed by a red lacquered wood with protective hardware engraved with scrolling foliage. Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 370.6 cm (2 x 63.1 cm, 4 x 61.1 cm); Height: 172.1 cm. Considering its age it is in a good condition with traces of wear conform age and old restorations. For a condition reference, please have a look at the photos. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
