Amazing lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), used for official displaying kimono. The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a repetitive design of crests 紋 (mon) depicting two crossed feathers in a circle 丸に違鷹羽紋 (maru ni chigai takanoha mon). Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a black lacquer substrate. The rack is fitted with partially gilt metal hardware, intricately engraved with traditional scrolling foliage 唐草 (karakusa) motifs surrounding the en-suite feather crest. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Height 160.9 cm, Width 190.8 cm, Depth 41.7 cm. Considering its age in a reasonable condition with old restorations and wear conform age. An ikô is a piece of interior furnishing documented to be used in Japan as early as the twelfth century. By the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, lacquer clothing stands had become a conventional item included in the bridal trousseau of wealthy women.
