Quran - Quran - India (Bihar) - 1425

A fabulous and rare illuminated manuscript folio from a Koran originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. We believe this folio to be from Chapter 97, Al-Qadr (The Night of Glory), celebrating the glorious night the Quran was revealed, believed to be the night of Ramadan 27, 610CE. The folio contains an illuminated Chapter heading (Surah) together with a magnificent illuminated Juz roundel in the adjacent margin (best viewed in image 5b) marking the start of a new Chapter. The folio contains 5 lines of scripture from Chapter 96, verses 17-19 above the Surah, and 5 below the Surah from Chapter 97, verses 1-3 ending "the Night of Glory is better than a thousand months". The aya (verse markings) are simple but effective in gold with 6 radials with 'Allah' (God) in gold lettering. The whole is framed simply in red and blue lines. The reverse also has an illuminated Surah and an illuminated Juz marking the 5th verse of the Chapter. All in all this is a very special folio that would grace any collection. This prosperous state, lying south of Nepal close bordering the Ganges river, became Muslim in the 12th century originally under the Bengal Governors. The Muslim calligraphers developed a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals. Because Bihar is a warm and humid province, manuscripts from there, do not generally keep well. This one, however, is in usually good condition despite the damp staining upper left of the folio, with the scripture untouched by damp and the juz, Surah and gold 'aya' (roundels) all being in a good state. PLEASE NOTE. Shipping costs are not solely the cost of the delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the delivery agent for processing. The manuscript will be sent with the supporting mount to ensure safe travel.
