In one of her earliest pieces, Painting to Be Stepped On (1960–1961), the artist invited viewers to walk on top of a canvas placed on the floor, thereby radically questioning the separation between art and life by asking viewers to participate in its completion. Her seminal performance, Cut Piece (1964), took this idea even further, putting herself at the mercy of an audience that cut her clothes off, piece by piece.
