Byôbu 屏風 (paravent) - Bois, Papier, Soie - Kunii Oyo 国井応陽 (1868-1923) - Japon - Année du « Mouton de Terre » 己未, Anno 1919

A fine mid-size six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined painting of a large crane 鶴 (tsuru) flying across a vast sea. On the left a narrow island with several pine trees. The entire scene is lit by an orange setting sun. From ancient times, cranes (tsuru) in Japan were said to live for a thousand years, serving as potent symbols of youthfulness and long life in both literature and art. Pine trees also signify longevity. This multi-coloured painting is set on a paper background. Stripes in the air create a calm and fresh atmosphere around the sea. The foggy streaks are created by very translucent gold paint applied to the lighter shade of paper. The screen is signed, sealed and dated in the lower left corner by the artist Kunii Oyo 国井応陽 (1868-1923). Dating the work during the beginning of winter of the year of the ‘Earth Sheep’ 己未, in this case 1919. The panels are mounted with two silk borders, a thin white brocade one, and a wide blue brocade one. The folding screen is protected by a black lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware. Dimensions: Total width: 333.0 cm (2 x 57.1 cm and 4 x 54.7 cm); Height: 152.1 cm. It is in a very good condition with some traces of wear conform age and old restorations. Please check the photos for a condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
