Cercueil - Bois plaqué - Coffret marqueté Renaissance

A rare Northern European, Dutch (or German), inlaid wooden chest. Netherlands (Northern Germany?), 17th century, richly decorated to include inlays. Provenance: manor house in Denmark. Soft wood (most probably pine) construction veneered with thick (c. 4 mm in visible places) walnut veneer. Top (probably associated) decorated with finely carved openwork relief with branches, foliage and fruits maintained in Gothic style, The top sculpture is attached to the lid with wooden pegs. All walls (to include back) are walnut-veneered and decorated with rectangular cartouches with Dutch-style borders, inlaid stripes and cherry (?) wood rectangular panels in the middle. Corners reinforced with iron mounts fixed with nails. Bottom fixed with wooden pins (pegs) and ebonized. The chest is supported on four turned legs made of hard wood. Interior with a small box with lid on the left side, lined with decorative material. Original wrought iron hinges preserved only on external part of the back-side of the chest, the rest of hinges is later replacement. Lock from the later date. Key missing. Dimensions: height - 25,4 cm; width - 47,8 cm; depth - 33 cm. Conditions report: reasonable condition considering age of the piece of furniture. Traces of old restorations and alterations (lock, hinges - mentioned above); minor traces of wood-worms (not active); veneer uplifted in places; minor marks, dents and scratches. Rectangular piece of wood with the key-hole is probably later addition. Few Dutch-style borders on sides missing. Minor elements of top-carving missing. Two legs with minor dents to finials. Dent to the low-right corner on the back. Wood drying crack to the bottom (not visible from inside). Check pictures for details, please. Worldwide delivery with online tracking!
