Chôzu'bachi 手水鉢 (bassin d'eau) - Granit - Japon - Période Taishō (1912–1926)

Great, heavy traditional Japanese chôzu’bachi 手水鉢 (water basin) made from a single piece of granite. The granite has a multitude of hues of grey and white, creating a nice natural mottled effect. The sides carved with grip handles. This type is known as Tetsubachi 鉄鉢, which translates to 'iron basin', this type mimics the globular metal bowls traditionally used by mendicant priests. Chôzu'bachi, also known as a water reservoir for the hands, is an ornamental feature frequently encountered in traditional Japanese gardens. Its purpose extends beyond mere decoration, as it serves as a vessel for ritual hand washing and mouth cleansing, and is in such environments called a tsukubai 蹲. Prior to engaging in the tea ceremony or stepping onto sacred grounds like Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, individuals partake in this purifying act. Chôzu'bachi embodies a profound cultural significance, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and spiritual preparation in Japanese traditions. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926). Approx. dimensions: Height 27 cm, Diameter 48.5 cm. The inner basin has a diameter of approx. 39.5 cm and is 18.5 cm deep. Weight 70 kg. In a very good original condition. Please have a look at the photos for a clear condition reference. Please note that the colour of this basin is a tad lighter than shown in our photos, as it was wet from rain when the photos were taken. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
