Impressive Thai bronze Buddha statue depicting Buddha protected by the seven-headed Naga serpent Mucalinda,

The Buddha is shown seated in a serene meditation posture (Dhyana Mudra) upon the tightly coiled body of the serpent king Mucalinda. Behind the Buddha rises the spectacular seven-headed Naga, forming a protective canopy around the figure.

According to Buddhist tradition, Mucalinda protected the meditating Buddha from heavy rain and storms following his enlightenment. The composition therefore symbolizes protection, meditation, serenity and spiritual enlightenment.

The reverse of the elaborate serpent hood features a circular Dharmachakra (Wheel of Dharma) motif. Particularly attractive are the individually modelled scales, the richly decorated Naga heads and the substantial coiled serpent base.

The sculpture is made of bronze and has a warm golden appearance. It is hollow cast, most likely using the traditional lost-wax casting technique. The open underside provides an interesting view of the construction. An iron core-support wire is still visible inside, a characteristic feature associated with this type of casting, where metal supports were used to stabilize the inner clay/sand core during the casting process. This visible wire is therefore part of the manufacturing technique and should not be regarded as evidence of a later repair.
