Losso Sculpture - Siou, Niamtougou Region, Togo
The male wooden figure possesses a stocky, powerful physique. A large, rounded head sits almost directly on broad shoulders; deep-set eyes, a short nose, and a slightly open mouth lend the face a concentrated severity. Strong arms frame the cylindrical torso, while bent legs and broad feet anchor the figure firmly in space. The incised geometric patterns on the chest, abdomen, and arms are particularly striking. The dark brown to blackish surface, worn in places, bears a thick patina of use and minor deposits.
The work is attributed to the Losso (Nawdba) people of northern Togo, specifically to the Siou region near Niamtougou. The sculptural traditions of the Losso and neighboring Lamba peoples are closely intertwined; even based on formal characteristics, a clear cultural distinction is often not possible. Anthropomorphic figures from this region exhibit a remarkable stylistic range, from highly abstract to fully sculpted forms. Various functions are described in the literature: the figures could serve as dwellings for spirits or ancestors (alua), as replacements for deceased twins, or in other protective and ritual contexts.
Literature (selection):
Pierre Amrouche: Corps & Décors. Statuaire Lamba et Losso du Togo. Paris 2008.
Thomas Keller: Northern Togo Statuary. Lully 2018.
Hans Peter Hahn: Die Werkstoffe Kultur der Konkomba, Kabyè und Lamba in Nord-Togo. Köln 1996.
