Wooden box - DELFTSCHE SALAOLIE, N.O.F. OLIEFABRIEK DELFT - with decor after the design by Theodorus van Hoytema (1863-1917)

Very special and rare wooden box for packing and transport of bottles of Delftsche salad oil, with on the sides images of an elephant holding a bottle of salad oil with its trunk and the NOF (Nederlandsche Oliefabroek) logo flanked by two salad oil bottles with the words 'DELFTSCHE-SLAOLIE OLIEFABRIEK DELFT'. Both scenes are 'framed' by a framework of unpeeled peanuts, alternated with green leaves. After the design of Theo van Hoytema that he made in 1905. Theodorus van Hoytema (1863-1917) was a Dutch illustrator, lithographer and graphic designer of book covers. He is especially known for his lithographic picture books with bird stories (examples of this are easy to find through a search engine). The Nederlandsche Oliefabriek was founded in 1883 by Jacques van Marken, aiming to produce oil of groundnuts or peanuts. In 1897 the factory merged with the French company of the Emmanuel and Georges Calvé brothers and became 'Nederlandsche Oliefabrieken (NOF) Calvé-Delft'. Size: Height: 32 cm / ca. 12 1/2 inch Width: 46 cm / ca. 18 inch Depth: 42 cm / ca. 16 1/2 inch Condition: In good original used condition. This is an antique box, with dents, scratches, discolourations and other minor signs of use consistent with age and use. We believe that these old objects/utensils give extra character and charm. The box has woodworm holes (as shown in the photos), but has been thoroughly treated for it. Furthermore, the box has been very carefully cleaned. Have a good look at the images shown to get an impression of the condition before bidding. Picture 12 shows cuts of closure seals (in the possession of the Delft City Archive). This image is for illustration purposes only and is not part of what is up for auction. Will be sent registered and insured.
