Motom - 48 - 50 cc - 1960

For restoration, with original documents of the time Located in Rome - Italy Historical notes: The first prototype was presented in 1947, at the Geneva Motor Show. The name was 'Motomic' and the parent company was registered in Switzerland for purely fiscal reasons but also for marketing reasons: in the collective imagination Switzerland, land of very precise watches and fine mechanics, as well as famous motorcycle brands with extremely refined mechanics and now forgotten such as Motosacoche and Moto Reve, was at that time the ideal location for a product that wanted to stand out from the competition for quality and refinement. The production itself, however, took place in Brianza; because, beyond everything else, Motom was Italian, very Italian. Engine, already with head valves in an era when side valves still dominated, it had 1.4 HP power, enough to project the moped at almost seventy kilometres per hour. Total weight did not exceed thirty-five kilos and production, which exceeded six hundred thousand units, extended from 1947 to 1970. Exceptional fuel consumption: the seventy kilometres with one litre were easily at hand, just like the many 'micro motors' that at that time applied to bicycles but certainly did not offer the same performance. The Motom (so called by the union of the words 'motorcycle' and 'atom', because at that time atomic energy represented the last frontier and gave an impression of great modernity) was one of Italian icons after World War II together with the Moto Guzzi Guzzino and Galletto, the Piaggio Vespa, the Gilera 150, the SIATA / Ducati Cucciolo, the Garelli Mosquito or the Innocenti Lambretta. All these famous, very famous vehicles will be dealt with in the next episodes; here it seemed appropriate to give due space to the scooter that looked like a real motorcycle and that released millions of Italians from the 'slavery of the pedal'.
