Very beautiful nostalgic figure of a milkman/farmer made of multicoloured glazed Flemish pottery, purely artisanal and handmade following the ancient process.
This milkman can be found in the rich tradition of 'Poterie Flamande' and Torhout's pottery and was made in the workshop Caessens (1908–1937) in Kortrijk, circa 1900-1915, formed in a mould and hand painted with colours by the use of oxides and finished with lead glaze.
In every culture, working with clay is an ancient heritage. Flemish pottery can also rely on a long tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Initially, mostly household utensils are made of local clay and covered with lead glaze.
At Caesens, street musicians, lace makers, figurative sculptures, folk figures and the famous wedding procession were sculpted.
The company grew until it employed about sixty employees. Hundreds of types of vases and figures in pottery were sold at home and abroad.
In the 1930s, the crisis years before World War II, production deteriorated and the furnaces at the company Caesens were shut down in 1937.
Beautiful example of typical Flemish pottery. For example, they not only have a decorative value but are also a valuable collectible.
Good condition with minor signs of wear (see the photos).
