A Mercedes designer is not easily distracted by fashion, but that was once different in the late fifties. The Mercedes with the code W111 (a design by Karl Wilfert) made its appearance and referenced the eccentric American cars of the time. Although it had considerably smaller fins than its American contemporaries, it still owes its nickname, Heckflosse, to it. However, Mercedes wouldn't be Mercedes if they didn't mention that the fins weren't so much for decoration as they had a logical function: as a corner marker, oh so handy when reversing into a parking space. Anyway: with the unveiling of the model in 1959. With the motto: 'The new six-cylinder - a class of its own' the first S-class was in fact born, because the model became the top model of the German company in one fell swoop. It was certainly modern, because the new Mercedes was equipped with a genuine safety body with crumple zones, as well as a chassis that could absorb a frontal blow because it was given a crumple zone at the front and rear. The theme of 'safety' was also implemented in the interior where you had a safety steering wheel - the column of which could not pierce through you like a spear.
A range of versions was available, of which the 95 hp 220b was the entry-level model. Our Mercedes is the 1965 version with 230S (120 hp) and a little later came the 250SE with 150 hp. In addition, various other models were available. For those who were still not satisfied, Mercedes launched the W112 in 1961. This car was the same as the W111, but came as a '300SE' with a 160 hp six-cylinder, air suspension, lots of chrome, and as a considerably more luxurious version. Until the arrival of the 600 series, it was the most luxurious car that Mercedes made.
This is a 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 S W111. It is finished in a blue metallic paint with light blue upholstery. The interior is neat and really takes you back in time. When the car was being designed, particular attention was paid to luxury and comfort. This is certainly reflected in this luxurious German car. The bottom of the car still has the original chrome hubcaps that also have the same colour as the bodywork. A Becker radio can be found in the interior of the car. The headliner is also of good quality.
These models were given the title of 'Heckflosse'. This means 'Fintail' in English. The tail fins, which were more harmonious in comparison with its American contemporaries, were corner markers according to Mercedes, which were useful when parking.
The car is in good, driving condition. Under the bonnet is a 2.3 ltr 6-cylinder that is linked to a manual gearbox. New Solex carburettors have been fitted and several ignition parts have been renewed. The tuning of the engine could be a little better. Besides that, the car drives, brakes and shifts well. Because the car has not been driven much in recent years, it is advisable to check the technical aspects if you intend to drive a lot of kilometres.
The bodywork is basically solid, but small, starting rust spots are visible in some places. Including the bottom of the rear doors. Please view the photos.
In terms of documentation, manuals are included. These are booklets such as the general manual, electrical installation diagram and another old catalogue.
