Masao Horino Masao Horino Iwanami Shoten/220mm×220mm/Japanese Masao Horino (1907-1998) was a Japanese photographer. After graduating from the Department of Applied Chemistry of Tokyo Higher Technical School in 1927, Horino worked as a stage photographer and joined groups such as the International Photographic Society and the Society for the Study of New Photography, where he produced ambitious experimental photographs. He is known as the standard-bearer of "emerging photography" in the early Showa period, and is also regarded as a pioneer of photojournalism in Japan, as he pursued the possibilities of photography as a printed medium and published "graph montages," which could be considered a pioneer of news photography. This book contains photographs from the 20s and 30s. The second half of the book includes women's photography, advertising photography, and news photography, as Horino experimented with a variety of photographic methods, including "the theory that photography can be used as a means of recording and communicating and can be widely distributed in society. Through his various experiments, Horino "had established a methodology to widely distribute photographs in society as a means of recording and communicating" (from this book). Although Horino did not work as a photographer after the war, this book provides an overview of his creative process condensed into a short period of time.
