When the Whitby Abbey was being built, they had to smooth out the cliff they were building on, and in doing so the great fire-breathing Wyrm that had made the land its home was disturbed from centuries of slumber. Having been rudely awoken, the Wyrm attempted to raise the town of Whitby to the ground, but the townsfolk banded together and banished the great beast into the sea.
