Qur'an - Qur'an, Bihar India-bi-folio - 1425
A bi-folio from a much used and frail Quran originating in the state of Bihar, India, circa 1425. The scripture contains verses from Chapter 18, Ayah al-Kahf (The Cave) v79-89, a Meccan Chapter which takes its name from the story of the people of the cave, itself 4 stories interjected with warnings to disbelievers and good news to believers. It is written in
a distinctive style of script called Bihari (after the State), characterised by wide, heavy and extended horizontal lines, and thin verticals.
In this case there are 17 lines of fine script within the left folio, with gold aya marking the verses and red diacriticals providing devotional direction. The folio has a complex Juz marginal marking in gold with red and blue circumference frames and some commentary below. The right folio has 16 lines of scripture, broken towards the lower portion by a gold Surah written in Thuluth, marked by an imposing marginal leaf shaped Juz, above which is a sub-juz marking a 5th/10th verse.
Because Bihar is a warm and humid province, manuscripts from there, do not generally keep well. This bi-folio has some water staining and significant archival paper repair to the rear which is evident on the front of the leaf (see image 6g). The repairs are not visible from the front when mounted.
