Albrecht Dürer / Abraham Waesberge - The Annunciation from the "Small Passion" series - 1630-1640

BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE PRINT OF THE FAMOUS "SMALL PASSION" SERIES by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Printed later around 1630-1640 in Holland by Abraham Waesberge or Waesberghe (1602-1672). The exact same print is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York (MET Accession Number: 47.100.138) and in the British Museum in London (BM Accession Number: E,4.182). PLEASE NOTE: the buyer will also receive a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). This fine engraving created with meticulous detail and great precision shows a remarkable copy from The Small Passion, created by the talented Abraham Waesberge also known as Waesberghe or Waesbergen, who was also art dealer in Holland, flourished around 1630-1640 and engraved prints himself, mentioned by Kramm. The other artist who collaborated on the creation of the prints was Jacob Aertsz Colom (1600-1673), an Amsterdam engraver, printer, bookseller and cartographer (RKD artists ID: 413988), he possessed an excellent sense of entrepreneurship that put him in competition with the then only nautical chart maker in Amsterdam Willem Janszoon Blaeu. Abraham Waesberge (RKD artists ID: 422143), was an engraver, publisher and art dealer born in Rotterdam (1602), active in that city between 1630 and 1640. After that date he also moved his activity and production to Amsterdam. The illustration on laid paper with chain lines and slightly age toned is well engraved with intact margins, great contrast and definition, one of the best productions of Dutch illustrators of the early 1600s. To complete the documentation, the photo of the title of the work is also published with the name of the artists who created the prints. Title and Description: the illustration represents the Annunciation, on the left the archangel Gabriel approaches the praying Virgin Mary in her bedchamber, over her head a dove representing the Holy Ghost, in the sky above a figure of God the Father. This print is part of the print series 'The Small Passion', consisting of a title print and 36 biblical scenes (mainly from the Passion), printed around 1509-1511 in Nuremberg. Sheet size: 148 x 117 mm or 5.8 by 4.6 inches. The engraving is in good condition (as shown in the photo), there are NO cuts or holes or restorations, some imperfections in the white margins outside the illustration. No text on the back. Beautiful detailed engraving drawn with great skill. References: Meder 1932 / Dürer Katalog (128); Bartsch / Le Peintre graveur (VII.119.19); Dodgson 1903, 1911 / Catalogue of Early German and Flemish Woodcuts in the BM, 2 vols (I.296.63.a); Schoch 2001-04 / Albrecht Dürer, das druckgraphische Werk. 3 vols I Intaglio, II Woodcuts, III Book illustrations (II.189); Biographisch woordenboek van Noord Nederlandsche graveurs [Waller] [herdruk 1974], p. 491.
