Beautiful shaped ceramic vase.
Good condition
Item Description:
This exquisite Bizen ware vase, handcrafted by Isesaki Mitsuru (1934-2011), is a testament to a legacy rooted in Japanese ceramic artistry. Born as the eldest son of Isesaki Yozan, a recognized artisan holding the title of Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture, Mitsuru deeply absorbed the traditions and skills inherent to his family's craft. After leaving the Okayama University Faculty of Education's Special Course in Fine Arts, he devoted himself to mastering pottery, assisting in the family business while simultaneously honing his craft. Alongside his brother Jun, Mitsuru played a pivotal role in restoring the medieval semi-underground anagama kilns, contributing significantly to the revival of Old Bizen ware. He inherited the distinct technique of "Hidasuki" – patterns created by wrapping the pottery with straw before firing – from his father and specialized in creating teaware and flower vessels. This vase embodies the rich heritage of Bizen pottery, distinguished by its earthy tones and unique textures that come to life through the ancient wood-firing process. Recognized in 1998 as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture, Isesaki Mitsuru's works remain highly revered.
