In the mid-1890s, Ryosuke Namiki graduated from merchant marine school and embarked as an engineer on a cargo ship engaged in overseas trade. Through his exposure to numerous imports, he developed a dream: 'I want to create something from Japan that I can be proud of to the world'. His desire and inquisitiveness bore fruit, and Ryosuke Namiki, who became a professor, obtained a patent for ink storage. In 1918, he founded Namiki Seisakusho and began manufacturing and selling fountain pens. This marked the beginning of Namiki's overseas expansion. After a tour of Europe, Namiki develops a method for manufacturing fountain pens using lacquer, which prevents the ebonite from deteriorating over time. The Kunikoukai is founded, led by Matsuda Gonroku, who later becomes a living national treasure. The NAMIKI brand is quickly recognised worldwide, including a European distributorship agreement with the world-famous Alfred Dunhill brand. It takes more than three months to complete one maki-e fountain pen, and sometimes as many as 130 processes to complete a gem of a fountain pen. This is one of the moments when Japan's traditional techniques and perfection are recognised worldwide. Pilot's fountain pens were the world's first capless fountain pens and made their innovation known to the world. While an increasing number of manufacturers outsource the production of parts, Pilot fountain pens are one of the few manufacturers, including the three major Japanese manufacturers, that carry out everything from alloy casting to in-house production in Japan. The company has also developed a rare technology to compound and weld its own iridosmin ball, the metal used in the nib, in-house. The company was the first to realise this in Japan in 1914 and has since developed and welded the material in-house, which is rare in the world and handles a rare rare metal that is considered to be extremely hard and resistant to wear. Iridosmin spheres are so hard that they approach diamonds and are extremely difficult to mould. This is where Pilot's stable nibs, writing quality and durability come from. The word 'pilot' means a 'pilot' who leads the way on a large ship. The company emblem is a floating ring, expressing the spirit of 'overcoming difficulties' and the 'firm bond' of always standing at the forefront of the times and facing challenges. After almost 100 years, Ryosuke Namiki's "world-class" confidence shines through now. We hope you will enjoy this gem of a writing instrument that accompanies its owner in his or her daily life.
