THE WINNING WINE:
PERINET + [PLUS] 2004

The vines of this "18+ elixir" are already over 80 years old and obviously not the least bit tired. Hugely complex on the nose, but still showing a certain minerality from the slate soil. On the palate there is a penetrating growth like a Pingus or L'Ermita by Alvaro Palacios. Powerful, demanding, fleshy and masculine with a generous portion of tannins.

"This complex, alcohol- and extract-rich cuvée made from up to 80-year-old Carinena and Garnacha vines, as well as a fifth of much younger Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, appears fresh and elegant despite the highly ripe fruit intensity accompanied by fine spice and toast notes and mineral. Fine-grained, almost sweet tannins structure the dense, fleshy fruit and the athletic body, which requires a carafe (for several hours) or a well-conditioned wine cellar to mature (at least 10 years). from an excellent vintage and an exemplary company."
