Expert's choice: special US comics & comic art selection

We pride ourselves on offering the very best, and most desirable, collectors items in our auctions. It's what makes Catawiki so exciting and why we continue to attract millions of visitors to our weekly auctions. Lately we've seen a huge growth in our weekly comics auctions which continue to attract some of the hottest comics and original comic art within the industry. With this in mind we wanted to tell all comics fans to mark their calendars! Our US Comics & Original US Comic Art auction ending on 22nd March (2018) has some absolutely outstanding comics available and this is something you will not want to miss. Our in-house US comics expert, Tim Plumbe, shared a list of his favourites from this auction and explained why of these comics are so exciting and worth adding to your collection. Read on to find out which he chose and what artist's work is appearing exclusively on Catawiki this week.

  • Expert's Choice 1: Journey Into Mystery #83
  • Marvel Comics - 1962 - First Edition - CGC 3.0

Tim: "Love it or hate it (personally one of my favourite Marvel films so far), it's clear that Thor Ragnarok divided opinions, but what is beyond doubt is the popularity of one of the true key comic issues. Journey Into Mystery #83 - the very 1st appearance of Thor - from 1962 is a classic in any grade!"

  • Expert's Choice 2: The Walking Dead #1
  • Image Comics - 2003 - First Edition - CGC 9.2
  • View comic
Tim: "Who'd have thought that when the first issue of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead was released in 2003 that it would go on to become such a hugely popular comic and TV series. Low print runs and low initial interest ensure this issue retains its high value and collector interest across all high grades."

  • Expert's Choice 3: Fantastic Four #7
  • Marvel Comics - 1962 - First Edition - CGC 7.0
  • View comic
Tim: "We've been lucky enough to showcase numerous early issues of The Fantastic Four in recent weeks, which is a huge sign of how far the US Comics & Original US Comic Art auction has grown but they don't often come around in such high graded condition as a 7.0. So this one is an exciting addition for many of our collectors."

  • Expert's Choice 4: Batman #17
  • DC Comics - 1943 - First Edition - CGC 8.0
  • View comic

Tim: "Batman, from the 1940s, in a graded 8.0! What more do you need to say about this one. This is an absolute gem of a comic book and we expect comic collectors to be lining up for this one."

  • Expert's Choice 5: Batman #121
  • DC Comics - 1959 - First Edition - CGC 3.0
  • View comic

Tim: "Batman fans will be spoiled for choice in this weeks auction. Another great key comic we have on offer is this awesome 1st appearance of Mr Zero (soon to become Mr Freeze!) in Batman #121."

  • Expert's Choice 6: Conan the Barbarian
  • Sanjulian - Original Oil on Canvas
  • View comic

Tim: "To have original artwork from the legend, Sanjulian, is one thing. To have it exclusive to the Catawiki auction before it is even published is another! We are incredibly excited to see this stunning oil painting of Conan feature in this weeks auction and whether you want to display this in your home, your office or your gallery it is the perfect show stopper!"
