Expert’s Choice: Ugo Leca Selects the Highlights From This Week's Coins & Banknotes Auction

By Thomas | 16th October 2018

In our Expert’s Choice feature, one of our experts shares their favourite items currently in auction. This week our Coins expert, Ugo Leca, selects four exceptional items from our coins and banknotes auctions for you to enjoy.

1. Spain - Fernando VII (1813 - 1833) 8 reales - Lima, ensayador J.P 1809. Busto indígena. Escasa - Silver

This 8 Reales coin dates back to the Napoleonic invasion of Spain. During that time, the mints in America had no idea how the official King’s portrait looked, so during Ferdinand VII’s reign, many busts were engraved differently. The imaginary busts of Mexico, the idealized busts in Seville, and the indigenous in Lima.

2. Yugoslavia - 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Dinara 1944 - Pick 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54 and 55 – SPECIMEN

During the Yugoslavia liberation, the first issue of the Republic of Yugoslavia was issued. These notes were issued by order of Tito and were prepared in Moscow. All denominations have the same vignettes, but the 500 dinara dates from a later issue and is signed and dated 1945. This set is a rare specimen set of these banknotes.

3. Italy - Republic of Venice - Soldino 1368-1382 – Silver

The coins of the Serenissima Republic of Venice always bears the lion of the apostle Saint Mark, holding a Bible in its paw. This is no different from this Soldino, which shows the lion on one side and the Doge, chief of state, on the other.

4. China - Kiang Nan - 1 Dollar (Yuan), Kuang Hsu, Year JiaChen (1904) – Silver

In this week’s China & East-Asia auction you can find four Chinese silver dragon dollars in high grade. In 1889, the Governor-general of Kwang Tung and Kwang Si provinces, Zhang Zhidong, ordered to mint the very first Chinese Empire silver dragon dollars in Kwang Tung provincial mint. This type of coin became very popular, and soon other provinces in China began to mint silver dollar coins in the same weight, but with a different design of the dragon. Until 1911 the design of the silver dollar was unified by Qing government’s currency reform law.
