The dial is much larger than the original Datejust’s (which only had a 36mm case). This gives more room for the Datejust II’s best feature: the Cyclops lens.
The increased real estate on the dial allows the 116300 to have better proportions between the Cyclops over the date, the hour markings, and the Caliber crown at 12:00 o’clock. The increase in size also creates a much better wrist presence and readability than its’ smaller predecessor.
Aesthetically, the DateJust retains relevance and will never go out of fashion.

Rolex DateJust (inspired by Rolex Bubbleback) was first introduced in 1945 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex. The Datejust is one of the earliest Rolex models that survives till today.
From its debut way back in 1945, a revolutionary launch that put the brand firmly on the map, it has remained at the top of the company’s bestseller list for three quarters of a century.
Rolex’s ref. 162XX series of Datejust watches first emerged in 1988, a replacement for the relatively short-lived ref. 160XX range.
