This delicate hexagonal dish, titled "Suikan Aoigai Makie," represents the pinnacle of traditional Japanese lacquer art, a masterpiece created in 1980 by the venerable Shoji Hoshin at the age of 82. A luminary in the world of lacquerware, Hoshin was a Tokyo native who specialized in the maki-e technique and was honored with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Fifth Order of Merit with the Zuiho Medal for his contribution to the preservation of cultural properties.

"Suikan" refers to the lush greenery of mountain landscapes, brimming with vitality, a theme Hoshin has masterfully captured in this piece. The dish features high-relief maki-e, a technique where the design is built up using lacquer mixed with charcoal or clay dust to create a three-dimensional effect. Here, it is employed to depict a bird in flight amid flourishing paulownia trees, symbolizing elegance and nobility. The gold leaf and mother-of-pearl inlay accentuate the splendor, while the back exhibits a “nashiji” finish, a pear skin texture achieved through sprinkling and polishing gold flakes.

This small dish presents minor signs of aging, such as surface wear and a few tiny lacquer chips (on the back side). These conditions are documented in the photographs provided. The original wooden box, inscribed with 82-Year-Old Hoshin and stamped with Hoshin's seals, confirms its provenance and the period of its creation.
