Off we go!

The BEIGE G3 DESKTOP is actually the very last "desktop form factor" that Apple ever build. And as many Mac collectors … I am obsessed by lasts ;)

Thus:
You are bidding on a remarkable and valuable "conversation piece" for the Creative Industry and a museum piece. Are you ready for this excellent conversation piece?

// SOME HISTORY

Apple has released a lot of really revolutionary computers using a G3 procesor. Many focussing on stricking designs and usability. However most Macfans – like myself – have a huge soft spot for this specific G3 Desktop. Honestly. It's my absolute favourite one.

You see. The desktop "form factor" is absolutely ICONIC for nineties era computers. But they fall out of favour at the end of the nineties. Every basically switched to tower cases (around 2000).

A desktop is very specific. It's ment to sit under … and hold a computer monitor on top of it. And back in the day does were gone be … huge heavy CRT monitors.

The beige G3 desktop came in the so-called "Outrigger case".

This beige look was typical for desktop computers of the day and most people (myself included) thought the original G3 was a sleek piece of equipment.

I have a lot of history with this Mac. The graphic design studio/ advertising company I worked for … got one of these. It was the workhorse of Advertising Companies – and Graphic Design Studios in the nineties.

// Why do you need one?

This is the ideal Mac for retro-computing for the bulk of nineties 68k software and PPC games. Because it has a floppy drive and CD-ROM it's also an amazing bridge between the eighties 4K Macs (like plus, classic, se, etc) en the more modern Apple machines.

It's a great "in between" machine right at the end of the beige line: has both SCSI and ATA, has built-in serial ports and also built-in ethernet (only 10BaseT but convenient nonetheless), has ADB and USB is easy to add. It's the last machine to use the old world ROM!

// ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

– DUST: the inside of a 30-year-old computer looks the same as "the collection-container of a vacuum cleaner" (read: a dust bunny). And as you know "dust" can ruin your electronics;

– LEAKS: 30-year-old batteries will someday leak, causing irreversible damage to the computer. The battery is replaced by a brand new battery;

– REFURBISHED: the floppy drive and cd-rom drive are both refurbished and works like a charm;

Long-Story Short. Computers from other vendors may look the same on the outside. I can guarantee you that the inside is very different! So if you want to enjoy your investment for as long as possible, choosing "wisely" is advisable.

// WHY BID - BUY?
On a technical level, this entire computer is "disassembled, cleaned, checked and assembled again". The computer has been cleaned inside & outside (dust-free).

This 100 % working, professionally checked “Vintage” bundle includes "tons of pre-installed software*" – like the expensive "Adobe Design Collection" and the "Microsoft Office 2001" suite – ready to use and give you a glimp of the past! Including software:

ADOBE DESIGN COLLECTION contains:
– Adobe Photoshop 7;
– Adobe Illustrator 10;
– Adobe Pagemaker 7;
– Adobe InDesign 2.0 (= the QuarkXPress killer).

MICROSOFT OFFICE SUITE contains:
– Word;
– Powerpoint;
– Excel.

Note:
– Both the applications and the operating system are installed in ENGLISH;

>> Disclaimer:
The computer only includes software* that is classified as "abandonware" (= from the Public Domain, distributed over the internet and available freely, easily and readily). The software is supplied "free of charge" as a free service (for the retro-computing fan).

// IMPORTANT WARNING: BRITTLE PLASTICS

All nineties Macs have very brittle plastic. Please only open the case if it's really necessary (and only do this … if you are an experience vintage-mac-restaurer – and want to bit the bullet). Because chances are high that you'll break some parts … and plastic crumbles to bits.

FYI:
The worst plastic bits for the G3 desktop are the "power button" and the air deflector over the PCI slots (usually broken). And like it's vintage peers also the "power button" on this machine is broken. Luckily you can start this type of vintage Mac with a ADB keyboard.

PS/ reproducing plastic parts (like the power-on button) can nowadays easily be done with a 3D-printer.

// WARNING – VINTAGE COMPUTER EXPECTATIONS

First-of-all. Please have realistic expectations when buying a vintage (retro) computer.
>> This is NOT a modern machine!

Because it seems like lately all I have are newbies "retrocomputing fans" with unrealistic expectations I give you a warning beforehand. It's advisable to search the internet before placing any bids. ;)

Eshethics:
– This computer was build in 1997 … so it looks as a (museum) item of the "nineties"
(remember: almost 30 years old!).

As these are "vintage items", they are being sold as. Normal signs of use and wear. But as an experienced connoisseur I can guarantee that these items are in VERY GOOD condition (always keeping in mind their age). The numerous images are part of the meticulous description. Thus: judge yourself! Be aware: pictures can sometimes give a more positive look-and-feel then reality.

Mechanics:
All mechanical parts make more noice than you are use to, compared with modern equipment. But this is “normal” behavior. Obviously this is a more-then-30-years old machine. The speed is therefore corresponding.

// A NOTE ON YELLOWED PLASTICS!
Some words on the yellowing.

Old computer cases are made of ABS plastics which contain at that time "bromine". The element bromine reacts over the time of years with UV light and causes some (not-always-even) "yellowing".

The good news however. Because this computer was located in a clean, smoke-free environment of an advertising company (with little UV light), the plastic has remained quite "gray" (compared to peer-G3 desktop-computers).

Last-but-not-least.

– there are "normal signs of use" (which are to be expected with a device of this age). PS/ some scratches, discolouration (and other ware-out) are difficult to capture on picture (but they are there … thus: please have realistic expectations!). You also need to be careful with the plastics (> plastic becomes brittle after almost-30-years and can break easily). Thus: HANDLE with both love & care.

– the Sound works but the speakers sounds distorted. Therefore it's better to use "low" volume to not blow-up the speaker.

To sum up.
As an experienced connoisseur I can guarantee that the G3 is in very good condition!
