Exceptional wedding chest in oak (high nobility) - France - 16th century, adjustments of the XVIIIth century
Exceptional Norman wedding oak chest (France) from the beginning of the 16th century, from a French castle.
This chest is decorated by 17 large and 12 small size lilies.
On both sides, 2 representations of Moses, carrying the tablets of the law are framing God, carved in niches, dictating the tables of the law to Moses, flanked by the four evangelists. You can find on this trunk all the symbolic of the French Renaissance ornaments, namely: the Lily flowers (nobility), Angels (purity), the Eagle (strength). Ornamental decorations such as: Gadroons, quills of birds, symmetrical cuts adorn the furniture.
The central panel, in gadroons decor, frames the scene of the feet washing (see Wikipedia) or Pedilavium. Jesus is seated in the center surrounded by his Apostles.
This furniture has a beautiful dark honey color, due to its patina from centuries.
Length: 141 cm, height: 89 cm, depth: 63 cm.
In good condition.
A special feature: in the 18th century, the top of this chest has been closed and the central front panel serves as opening. All this, for the sake of convenience, doesn’t affect the quality of this prestigious furniture.
An old piece of history of 500 years.
