A wooden model of the Cutty Sark. (1869)

The Cutty Sark is a tea clipper that was built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland. The ship acquired great fame with the races against it’s great rival, the Thermopylae, and other tea clippers. Like many other ships of that time, the construction of the Cutty Sark entailed a wrought iron frame with a cladding of wooden planking. The ship is a total of 85.4 metres long, 11 metres wide and weighs almost 836 tons. The ship was built by the firm Scott & Linton for Captain John "White Hat" Willis. The scope of construction was so heavy that it bankrupted the shipyard and the Cutty Sark was completed in the long run at another shipyard. The Cutty Sark is built with the finest materials, and thus has been very well preserved. The ship was launched on 22 November 1869. The ship completed it’s first trip in a time of 69 days. All the subsequent trips were completed within 75 to 80 days. Their major competitor, the vessel the Thermopylae, succeeded in doing this only once. It is generally assumed that the Thermopylae was slightly faster but that it was the greater abilities of the master of the Cutty Sark that allowed the ship (almost) time and time again to win the tea race, albeit sometimes with a narrow difference of only several hours. This handmade sailing ship is made out of wood. It has been finished in great detail and deserves a prominent place in your home. Please take a good look at the detailed photos for a good impression of the ship. This model is in it’s original box. Height: 23 cm. Lot consists of 1 item. The object is in good condition.
