Arnold Böcklin (Basel 1827 - San Domenico 1901) was a Swiss painter, draughtsman, graphic artist and a sculptor. He is considered one of the most important artists of the 19th century in Europe. His work is included in symbolism. Böcklin studied at the Düsseldorf academy and was a teacher at the Kunstschule in Weimar from 1860 to 1862. From 1862 to 1866 he worked in Rome.
