Henri Plaat (Amsterdam, 1936) Versatile artist Henri Plaat was born in Amsterdam and grew up in the neighbourhood behind the concert hall. Due to his frequent absence, he left the Reformed Grammar School prematurely. A number of tests showed that the typology department of the School of Applied Art would be the best fit for him. After finishing his education in typology, Plaat worked as a graphic designer for a short time. Because he found this too restrictive, he began to draw. In 1963, he decided to further devote his career to fine arts and began painting and watercolouring. He also made sound montage using the pseudonym Henri Schweben; some of his short films were also be released under this name. Like his movies, his sound collages often evolved around the subject of World War II. His fascination for this subject arose from seeing war-time news broadcasts at the Film Museum in the year that he left the gymnasium. He wanted to draw the tragedy of the war into the absurd, because 'tragic situations have inevitably absurdist sides'. So far, Plaat has made many different kinds of work, such as gouaches, drawings, collages, lithographs, etchings, oil paintings, forty films, sound collages, cartoons, texts and series of pictures. Yet Plaat is best known for his landscapes, which mainly consists of collages that are composed of squares or diagonals. Next to his well-known landscapes, Plaat started with his Goddesses series in the 1980s. It compromises a series of gouaches in which he, in combination with African statues, depicts silhouettes of human figures.
