Ivory and gemstone elephant - Kandy, Sri Lanka - circa 1930

An excellent sculpture of an ivory elephant, clad all over in a gold-plated silver mantle, set with gemstones (pink, blue and yellow sapphire, star sapphire cabochons, faceted rubies and sapphires, chrysoberyl and other gemstones) measuring a total of circa 12.8cm in height. The elephant is depicted clad in the traditional Esala Perahera (festival of the tooth) ornamentation. This historical procession is held annually to pay homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, which is housed at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. The relic is carried in a sacred casket or stupa on the back of a heavily decorated and bejewelled elephant. For a similar object see Christie's Jewels: The New York Sale held on April 22, 2009 in New York, Rockefeller Plaza, Lot 168. This lot comes with a certificate of age issued by a certified appraiser, confirming that the artwork dates from before 1947 in accordance with CITES regulations. Condition: Missing some tiny hanging metal pieces at the bottom, otherwise in very good conditon. This lot will be carefully packaged and sent by registered and insured mail. NO SALE OUTSIDE EUROPE
