Kora musical instrument - Senegal (130 cm)
Kora, national musical instrument from Senegal. The great string instrument still makes a beautiful sound. The Kora stands straight on the ground by itself. Large specimen, made of gourd, wood and animal skin. Condition: good, with a wonderful patina of old age.
A Kora is a string instrument from West Africa that belongs to the harps and is played with two hands. It is hundreds of years old and is first mentioned as korri by Mungo Park in his Travels into the Interior of Africa (1799).
The appearance of the instrument is more of a guitar than a harp. The kora consists of a gourd that is strung with the skin of a cow or an antelope.
The kora is played in Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The most famous kora player is Toumani Diabaté.
