Beautiful work in exquisite Flippo frame.
Kever was born in a well-to-do family. His mother was friends with Jozef Israëls who offered him a spot in studios of leading lithographers, including Petrus Franciscus Greive. When Greive died in 1872, Kever settled as an independent painter in Eemnes, where he often worked outside. He also made interiors, mostly without figures, to avoid the costs of using a model.
In 1878, he took a winter course at the Royal Academy for the Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he was supervised by Karel Verlat, together with his friend Theo Hanrath, who passed away in 1883. After this study, he settled in Blaricum, but he kept a pied-a-terre at the Oosterpark in Amsterdam, where he stayed during the winter months.
Kever was not much of a traveller. With the exception of a few short periods, in which he worked in Nunspeet and Brabant, he remained in the Gooi. In 1887, he married and bought a house in Laren, across from ‘Villa Ariette’, Anton Mauve’s house, who he looked up to. When Mauve once evaluated one of his paintings, he hid it and told Mauve that it was already sold, afraid of his assessment.
