Gabriele D’Annunzio - Autograph; Correspondence made up with three Letters to Daughter Renata Anguissola (Cicciuzza) - 1916/1918

Correspondence of three handwritten letters of Gabriele D'annunzio to his daughter Renata Anguissola. Letters addressed to the illegitimate and beloved daughter of the poet, the only one recognised by D'annunzio, Eva Adriana Renata Anguissola, known with the affectionate paternal term of endearment “cicciuzza”. D'Annunzio writes to his daughter from the Casetta Rossa or Casina delle Rose, overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice, guest of Prince Fritz von Hohenlohe, following a serious accident to his right eye due to a violent sea plane landing on the lagoon of Grado in 1916. The poor health state of the poet is evidenced by the disorderly and painful spelling of the missives, which nevertheless are pervaded by an incredible tenderness, as proof of the deep affection that bound D'annunzio with Renata. Letter no.1 (with envelope) addressed to Donna Renata Anguissola "Danieli" “ Cara Piccola, Io sto meglio con l’occhio, e verrò a vederti nel pomeriggio e ti porterò altri libri. Abbi pazienza. Spero che la tua stanza sia calda. Ho lavorato fino alle tre (Il Poeta sta scrivendo il Notturno), e ho finito le preghiere. Gabri” Letter no. 2 (with envelope) addressed to Donna Renata D’Annunzio “Danieli”. Note how the poet uses his last name instead of that of his daughter. “Cara Piccola, Telefona tu a Colonna (?) (…) per dirle di venire stasera nel nostro giardino (La Casetta Rossa) dopo il pranzo. Arrivederci Il tuo Paparetto”. Letter no. 3 “Cara Piccola, La Pia non può andare all’Ospedale. Ti aspetta dunque a colazione. Stasera non potrò pranzare con te. Come vorresti passare la serata? Vuoi andare a Teatro? Bisognerebbe trovare una compagnia. Mi manchi. Teneramente Gabri” Pages: 8 Handwritten pages: 4 (Stock photo, not included in the lot) Autograph with certificate of authenticity (COA-R), registered in our archives.
