FUNCTION: in certain regions in southern Baninko, the "MUSSO KORONI ", which literally means old lady, is not assimilated to a mythical ancestor, but to a female one in general, who will protect the entire community thanks to her powers; she represents the cycle of creation and the feminine ideal. POPULATION: Bamana from Baninko, southern Mali. DIMENSIONS: 74 cm, in very dense wood, it weighs about 9 kilograms. DESCRIPTION: seated in a hieratic position, she presents a child to the community of which she represents the creator of the lineage, and of which she is the matrix, the méreni, “the mother”. STATE OF PRESERVATION: ancient used condition, with important traces of manipulation and wear, without break nor restoration. PROVENANCE: former Keita dynasty, a dignitary of the Kamablon, in Kangaba, in the Mandé country; Farafi Gallery, Aix en Provence, specialist in Arts of Mali since more than twenty years.
