After the Topolinos from before and after the war the Fiat 500 came which made Italy and far beyond mobile. The 2 cylinder air-cooled engine makes a beautiful sound and was always recognisable. Between the chairs the left handle was the choke and the right handle for starting after the key was put in the ignition. My wife called it her “backpack”. Everything fitted in it. In spring or summer the linen roof would be open and you could smell the freshly mown grass. And starting and always running, also in winter when the neighbour’s BMW had to be dragged through the snow with the 500.
