Gerard Majella, originally Gerardo Maiella (Muro Lucano, 23 April 1726 – 16 October 1755) is a Roman Catholic saint. His feast is on 16 October.
In 1726, Majella was born in Muro Lucano, near Naples, the son of a tailor. In 1749, he joined the Redemptorists as a lay brother. Here he fulfilled simple work without any objections. He was known for the patience he showed when subjected to insults and pain, and for his charity work.
Gerardus Majella had many visions during his lifetime. Several supernatural phenomena, like healings, bilocation (presence in multiple locations at once), clairvoyance, prophecies and bread multiplications are also attributed to him. In 1755 Gerard died of tuberculosis at the age of 29 in Caposele, Southern Italy.
Gerard Majella is the patron saint of tailors, doormen, and pregnant women. He was beatified by pope Leo XIII in 1893 and canonised by pope Pius X in 1904.
