History: this fish in painted wood is a puppet with articulated fins. It can be found among the Bozo, an ethnic group established in Mali and Niger. Skilful fishermen, they are considered to be the “masters of the river”. There is a legend regarding the origin of this piece. A Bozo fisherman is said to have been abducted by spirits of the bush. During his detention, the spirits taught him the art of puppetry. At his return to the village, the fisherman visited the forgers, and together, they began to create puppets. Bozo puppets are still currently used for the celebration of successful fishing during which dances are performed, accompanied by the chants of women and by drums.
