This kokeshi was crafted by Sansaku Sekiguchi 関口三作, one of the most renowned kokeshi artisans in history. The design represents a Haniwa warrior. Haniwa refers to earthenware funerary objects found in Japan, often buried alongside emperors' tombs to protect the emperor in the afterlife.
Haniwa is known for its unique and charming shapes, featuring gentle facial expressions, and has even been used as characters in children's television programs.
