Founded in 2016 by Keichi Toita, the Akkeshi distillery is the second built on the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan. The founder, who is a great lover of Scottish whiskies, took care to shape a peat malt that echos those of Islay Island in Scotland. Indeed, the island of Hokkaido is surrounded by the sea and the bogs of Bekan-Beushi. The distillery has launched its "Solar Term" range, a limited edition series, each of which is inspired by the old Asian calendar where a year is divided into 24 solar seasons. Thus, each new series bears the name of the season during which the bottling takes place. This Blended Daikan, bottled in 2022, represents the 24th and last season of the solar cycle, the coldest period of the year. In this blend, the local Akkeshi malt represents more than 50% and the rest is represented by the New Pot Grain imported and aged for more than 3 years on the hill overlooking Akkeshi Bay. The label illustrates Kearashi, or "frost smoke", a unique and natural phenomenon in the region, where foggy waves or vapours are observed on the surface of the sea. It is an unusual phenomenon that requires special weather conditions.
