John Rathbone (1750–1807) - Going to market
Here we have a fabulous old master 18th Century oil on oak panel by the English artist John Rathbone 1750-1807. The painting features a horse and cart with calves aboard as they travel to market. A beautiful piece of art that would complement any serious art collection.
The artist exhibited 48 landscapes at the Royal Academy, 3 works are held at the British Museum, also at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and the Salford Art Gallery. He frequently collaborated with George Morland and Julius Caesar Ibbetson, with them painting the figures in John Rathbone’s landscapes. So quite possibly the driver of the cart was painted by George Morland!
The provenance is the handwritten Vicars Brothers gallery label verso who resided in Old Bond Street London.
