Jim Morrison Music By The Doors – An American Prayer "An American Prayer" is an album by The Doors that was released in 1978, seven years after the death of their lead singer Jim Morrison. The album consists of recordings of Morrison's poems recited to instrumental tracks by the surviving band members. The project was led by the band's keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, who wanted to realise Morrison's vision of spoken word recordings set to music. The album contains previously unpublished poems by Morrison as well as some of his earlier works. The music ranges from bluesy rock to ambient soundscapes, creating a unique fusion of spoken word and music. "An American Prayer" is a tribute to Morrison's poetic talent and his influence on the music of The Doors. Notable tracks on the album include "Awake", "Bird of Prey" and "Ghost Song".
