Its origins date back to the Genroku era of the Edo period, boasting a history of over 300 years. Tsugaru lacquerware is characterized by four representative techniques, and in the classification of lacquer techniques, it is known for the method called 'togi-dashi kawari-nuri' (polishing and changing coatings), which is considered the most significant feature of Tsugaru lacquerware. This meticulous process, involving the application and polishing of layers, requires more than 40 steps and takes over two months to complete. Renowned for its exceptional durability, Tsugaru lacquerware is often described as 'robust.' The distinctive pattern on this tea caddy is created using a technique called 'kinmushi kuinuri 金虫喰塗' (Gold-eaten lacquer technique). In this method, gold leaf is applied to a base with raised and depressed areas, and then multiple layers of lacquer are applied on top.
