Gandharan massive Buddha Stucco Head. With David Aaron Authenticity Certificate. Pakistan. 4th-6th Century B.C.
The Buddha is here shown with an extremely tranquil and contemplative meditative expression on his face. His strongly carved eyebrows cast a serene shadow upon his heavily lidded eyes, lowered in concentration. His hair, wavy and tousled, is pulled back in an unadorned and simple manner, away from the face, to emphasise his thoughtful expression. The narrow lips are pursed, and as with the lower lids of his eyes, remnants of red pigment are visible. It would also seem that the entirety of his face was gilded subsequently, adding intrinsic value to this already incredibly aesthetically pleasing piece. With metal custom stand.
The first anthropomorphic representations of Buddha were influenced by the Graeco-Roman artistic tradition, which reached Gandhara with Alexander’s armies in the late fourth century B.C. Successive Greek and then Asian rulers melded artistic styles, the syncretism an extremely distinctive Graeco-Buddhist style which can be seen to wonderful effect here.
