Stefan Moses - Die Monographie. Fotografien 1947 bis heute - 2002

"Taking photos is remembrance work. Mine is to document people before they disappear." - Stefan Moses - EXCELLENT MONOGRAPH by ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS German post-photographers - showing all his famous series and photos. Much more uncommon bookstore edition in hardcover with separate dustjacket (there was also a paperback variant published same time). "Working in the tradition of pioneering German portrait photographer August Sander (1876-1964), creator of the famous 'People of the 20th Century' series, Moses nevertheless developed his own style. His respectful and nuanced portraits, usually in black-and-white, are legendary. The young photographer was a chronicler of his times, documenting through different series in the 1950s and 60s the snobbish nouveau riche of the West German Wirtschaftswunder, big city poverty or the seclusion of former German emigrants who had left Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945. His photos appeared in popular magazines such as the weekly Stern, and contributed to changing Germans' perception of society. Today, his works are contemporary historical documents. His black-and-white portrait of Chancellor Willy Brandt, alone in a snowy forest, is an icon of German photography. Theodor W. Adorno, Ingeborg Bachmann, Hilde Domin, Tilla Durieux, Thomas Mann, Heinrich Böll, Günter Grass, Martin Walser and Botho Strauss are just some of the public figures he portrayed." (Heike Mund) Published on the occasion of the Stefan Moses' big exhibition tour through Germany: "Fotomuseum im Münchner Stadtmuseum", "Kunsthalle zu Kiel", "Willy-Brandt-Haus Berlin" (all in 2003), "Friedrich-Hundt-Gesellschaft im Stadtmuseum Münster", "Kunstverein Ludwigshafen", "Landesmuseum für Kunst- und Kulturgeschcihte Oldenburg", "Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn" (all in 2004), "Staatliche Galerie Moritzburg Halle" (2004/2005) and "Hygiene Museum Dresden" (2005). Welcome to the "GERMAN PHOTOBOOKS" auction by Ecki Heuser (5Uhr30.com, Cologne) - with more than 100 fantastic lots. IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 OF MY BOOKS IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. Schirmer and Mosel, Munich. 2002. Hardcover with dustjacket. 270 x 320 cm. 336 pages. Photos: Stefan Moses. Edited by Ulrich Pohlmann, Matthias Harder, Stefan Moses. Text: Marion Ackermann, Ilse Aichinger, Hubertus von Amelunxen, Harald Eggebrecht, Hans M Enzensberger, Felix Hoffmann. Text in German. Condition: Book inside and outside excellent, fresh and flawless; clean with no marks and with no foxing. Dustjacket with trace of use, but complete with no tears, no taped tears and with no missing parts. Overall fine condition. Great, big Stefan Moses monograph - here in the much more uncommon bookstore edition with separate dustjacket. "Born in Legnica, Province of Lower Silesia, Moses was forced to leave school in 1943 because of his Jewish heritage and survived a forced labour camp. After training as a photographer in Wrocław shortly after the end of World War II, he worked as a theatre photographer at the Deutsches Nationaltheater und Staatskapelle Weimar. From 1950, he lived in Munich, where he first became known for his reportages for the Stern. His documentary portraits of people and professions in West Germany (Germans) and later in East Germany (Farewell and Beginnings) made him accessible to a large audience. Moses took people out of their working environment and photographed them in front of a grey linen cloth - thus creating contemporary documents. Stefan Moses also created portraits of numerous personalities such as Thomas Mann, Ilse Aichinger, Erich Kästner, Peggy Guggenheim, Theodor W. Adorno, Otto Dix, Max Frisch or Martin Mayer. An exhibition of his life's work has been on display in various European cities since 2003. In 2017, the grand seigneur of German portrait photography, bequeathed 158 large-format portraits of German emigrants to the Stiftung Exilmuseum Berlin. These were taken between 1947 and 2003. Stefan Moses was married to the artist Else Bechteler-Moses." (Wikipedia)
