An interesting and eclectic voyage, captained by C.T. Kettlewell, went
from Colomo through Singapore to Formosa and the Ryukyu islands
and on to Japan. The "MARCHESCA" went to Kamschatka via Yokohama
and returned to Japan on a four month sojourn. They continued on to
explore the little known Sulu archipelago & N. Borneo for about six weeks.
The traveller Francis Henry Hill Guillemard [1852-1933] was a passionate
enthusiast for birds of paradise, which feature among the illustrations.
