Traditional Tantric Shaman mask, dates back to the 1970-1980's.
The Tharu people are an ethnic group living in southern Nepal. The word Tharu is thought to be derived from 'sthavir'. Sthavir means follower of Theravada Buddhism. The Tharu people see themselves as descendants of Gautama Buddha.
Shaman masks such as these are used in religious rituals. Mostly by a Shaman and sometimes by Buddhist monks. During such a ritual special dances are performed while wearing a mask and a costume. The purpose of these rituals is to heal and purify. The mask helps the Shaman to embody spirits that surround the living world so that the sick can be healed, evil forces can be driven away and people will be guided through important changes in their lives such as birth, adulthood, changes in social status and death .
Masks such as these are also used to hang in the house serving a protective function.
