beautifully carved vintage Māori tokotoko stick with spiralling wood vine which actually goes through the stick in places and Pau Pau shell inserts including a fabric cord and sash.
This came from an old naval sea faring family and I have been told that it may be a New Zealand Māori tribal orator talking stick called a tokotoko.
Apparently they can be quite rare as each tribe had one and you were only permitted to talk or address the tribe while holding this important ceremonial stick or staff.
I found one after long research near identical in a long standing private collection mentioned through the New Zealand Māori Museum
Approximate weight 316g length 35.5” by 1.5” tapering down to 0.8” width at end
