As a talented poet and calligrapher, his works are admired for their artistic and cultural significance. The scroll presents a forceful two-line inscription that embodies the essence of Japanese calligraphy, where the fluidity and dynamism of the strokes are as essential as the written characters. Duke Nijō Motohiro was not only a skilled artist but also a contributor to the development of Hokkaido and a political figure who studied at Cambridge University in England. Appointed as a Duke in 1884, he was an influential member of the House of Peers for three decades. The scroll is authentically adorned with bone-crafted ends, a traditional embellishment that enhances its cultural value. Its condition reflects its historical age, with visible signs of wear including staining and creasing on the paper, peeling at the top fabric border, and a noticeable tear on the bottom fabric, as detailed in the accompanying photographs.
